Project Description (22)

Students will complete all 10 levels in the Makey Makey Beginner Challenges and at the end the students will create their own Makey Makey invention to share with their classmates. This will encourage the students to be creative and innovative. They will use their knowledge of the Makey Makey to complete all 10 levels.

This can be done individually or in pairs.

NGSS Engineering
3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
3-5-ETS1-3. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.

Materials

-Makey Makey's
-Laptops/Chromebooks
-Play-doh
-Aluminum Foil
-Usual classroom items
-Cardboard

Directions

1. Introduce the activity to the students
2. Have them get in pairs
3. Give them 1 challenge at a time
4. In order to move to the next level they must demonstrate the level they are currently on to show their understanding
5. As they get to level 10, have them share their final idea to help with the feasibility of their invention

Debrief
1. Have the students share their inventions
2. What was hard when creating their invention, what was easy?
3. Which challenge was the most difficult and why?

Time Estimate: 1-3 days (60-75 minutes per day)

Comments

The students absolutely love these challenges and loved creating their own invention. They seemed to do the best in pairs for this activity.
